Mixed media sculptures: PU foam, acrylic paint, mirror tiles

This modular sculptural piece was created as an expression of a human soul: we're imperfect, made up of hundreds of fragmented pieces, coming together to form one whole. Sometimes we radiate magnificently, other times we're uncertain of what we really are, who we are, or what our place is in this world.
The mirror tiles represent fragments of our personality, our thoughts, and parts of ourselves we show to the world. Depending on who we are and who is looking in, each reflection shifts. Every person who gazes into it sees a slightly different version, shaped by their own perspective, journey, and biases.
The artwork is a reminder that we only ever glimpse small pieces of each other, and what we see is heavily influences by who we are. The sculpture becomes whatever the viewer makes of it; fluid, shifting, and free to transform endlessly.

In connection to queer identity, the abstract shapes and altering reflections are symbolic of the journey of self-identity. It's fluid, constantly evolving, holding onto past and new ideas, free to take on any form it desires. It can't control how others will perceive it, but it can explore its own journey of self-expression.
Being queer to me means not being afraid of expressing your true self, and allowing space for everyone else to also express themselves. Without shame, no matter how different we all are, and showing compassion for everybody's unique journey. What makes us different is what makes us beautiful and interesting souls.

The piece was exhibited in the Out in the Open exhibition at Treehouse NDSM during Amsterdam Pride 2025, part of the official Pride Art Route 2025.
Each squiggly shape is available on its own or in combination with other shapes. Please get in touch for more details on sculpture acquisition.
